2 Day & 1 Night Tour – Sightseeing & Shopping in Chiang Mai
Degree of difficulty: Easy
Day One
Meal Code: (L)
Depart the resort by minibus and head south into Chiang Mai. Turn off into the Mae Sa valley and head up towards Samoeng to the Pong Yang Elephant Camp for a genuine ‘elephants at work’ show. Take a 1.5 hour Elephant Safari through thick jungle to two waterfalls. Continue along the Samoeng loop to the beautiful Suan Bua Hotel & Resort for a set Thai lunch. After lunch, continue on to the Hang Dong and Ban Tawai areas, where the overseas dealers buy their products. Stops are made at various small shops and factories selling antiques, reproduction furniture, rattan, handicrafts and bric a brac. Continue in to Chiang Mai proper where you stop off in an area of the old town where the silversmiths ply their trade.
Check into the hotel of your choosing in the centre of the town with the famous Chiang Mai night bazaar on its doorstep. Either eat at one of the many western food restaurants in the city centre, or ask your guide to take you to one of the several traditional Thai restaurants or popular bars on the river and outside the city centre. Dinner is at your own expense. Spend the remainder of the evening exploring the night bazaar.
Day Two
Meal Code: (B, L)
Breakfast in the hotel. Depart by minibus for Sankampaeng, and the more tourist orientated handicraft centres: Umbrella making, ceramics, silk, cotton and ‘saa’ paper products. Stop at those you wish to visit, and then continue on to the Orchid and Butterfly Farm in the Mae Rim area. Head north once more to visit the rather special and little visited temple – Wat Thoeng Luang. There is a sacred ambience about the place not found in many temples along the tourist trail. Take lunch at Chiang Dao Hill Resort, in a restaurant set under giant trees in an idyllic stream side setting. Continue north stopping briefly at the scenic forest temple at Tum Tubtao, returning to Maekok Village River Resort in the mid to late afternoon.
