Depart your hotel by vehicle at 8am escorted by an English speaking tour guide an head up into the mountains near the Burma border to visit the ex-Kuomingtong settlement of Ban Mae Salong. The settlement is well known for its exotic market, tea plantations, and the Yunnanese dialect spoken by its inhabitants. Continue to the south towards the Fang valley, stopping to visit the Akha village of Ban Lorcha, a demonstration project for hill tribe tourism, then on to a Padong (long necked Karen village) for a glimpse of these interesting people, a sub group of the Karen. Descend into the Fang valley arriving at Ban Thaton for a buffet lunch, riverside at the Maekok River Village Resort.

pic2Depart Ban Thaton heading north along rural roads to a Black Lahu village, Ban Pha Tai, the boarding point for a 2hr long-tailed boat ride down the stunning Kok river, one of the major attractions of the north. You travel through scenic gorges of bamboo clad forest interspersed by remote village communities from which the children cry hello (and then run away embarrassed by their bravery). You arrive at the Karen village of Ban Ruam Mit, a well established elephant camp where you embark on a 1 hour elephant safari through the secondary jungle and agricultural lands surrounding the village. The return leg is invariably through the shallow waters of the Kok river. After your safari, enjoy a walk through the extensive village handicraft market (closed on Sundays) before being met by your waiting driver and being transferred back to your hotel.

Description: The Gardens and Winter Palace of Doi Toong, Mae Sai & The Golden Triangle.

Depart your hotel by vehicle with an English speaking tour guide and head due north along the road to the Burma border and China beyond. Turn off to the west and climb, along excellent roads, the steep ascent to Doi Toong, the Queen mothers winter palace (now open to visitors), and the stunning, well laid out winter gardens that the queen mother loved so much. Take either the mountain route (if the road is open, via Doi Pa Mi with its panoramic views of the valley below, or the more direct return trip back downhill the way you came. Both take you to the Thai-Burma border village of Mae Sai, and its counterpart, Tachilek across the river on the Burmese side. Take lunch at a local restaurant in Mae Sai.

Clients who wish to visit the market in Tachilek.(no visa required but an entrance fee is paid), may request to do so at the expense of having the programme being conducted at a less leisurely pace that normal, omitting one of the afternoon elements if need be.

Travel west to the infamous Golden Triangle, arriving at Ban Sop Ruek where Thailand, Laos, and Burma meet. Take a boat excursion to the 3 border meeting point on the river, then across to Koh Don Sao, a handicrafts market on an island on the Laos side. Having browsed around the market, you return to the boat and back to the Thai side before visiting the fascinating Opium Museum. The return trip to Chiang Rai and the Legend, takes a little over an hour and we travel via the old La Na Kingdom city of Chiang Saen with its bustling rive front markets where boats from China exchange agricultural produce with the Thai market.

Guests arrive back at your hotel in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on the pace dictated for the tour.

Description: An Elephant Safari and a day walk through Hill Tribe villages

pic1Depart your hotel, escorted by an English speaking tour guide, and take a long tailed boat trip up the Kok river to the elephant camp in the Karen village of Ban Ruam Mit. After browsing through the village hill tribe market (optional), you mount elephants for a 2 hour safari inland through secondary forest to the Lahu hill tribe of Ban Yafu. Dismount and take a picnic box lunch in the village.

After lunch, the elephants leave us and we commence walking further inland through low hills to Huay Mae Sai Waterfall, where we enjoy a short break. The guide will take every opportunity to provide you with information on the hill tribes of the area, and on the flora and fauna, as you walk. Once rested continue on heading further inland to the Yao hill tribe village of Ban Huay Mae Sai. Take a look around the village, then when ready, we take local ‘songtaew’ (pick up truck) transport for a 45 minute journey back to your hotel.

Description: A horse trek for beginners, in the mountains outside of Mae Chan.
Degree of difficulty: Easy to medium.
Meal Code: (L)
Depart your hotel by vehicle and escorted by an English speaking tour guide for a local horse ranch in the hills above Mae Chan. On arrival, you are matched up with the right horse, and commence a 1.5 hr. training session that introduces you to horse riding. Take a break and enjoy a picnic lunch in the grounds of the horse ranch. After lunch, mount your horse for a 1 hr ride through rice paddy, secondary jungle and agricultural lands to an Akha village, then return along another route to the ranch. When ready, drive back to Chiang Rai (45 minutes) and your hotel.
