Chiang Mai to Ban Thaton (& vice versa)

Ban Thaton is home to the stunning Maekok River Village Resort, a property owned and managed by Track of the Tiger along with our partners. It existed first as the Maekok River Lodge but, as we expanded and business grew, a bigger property was developed on another piece of land 1km downriver. Since then, we have, once again, grown beyond our facilities and are currently building yet another resort another 500m down river from the second resort. This property will open its doors in October 2008.

Track of the Tiger offers a variety of tours that allow guests to travel to and from Chiang Mai and Ban Thaton (173km) or Chiang Rai and Ban Thaton (92km). The journey either way provides fascinating excursions and opportunities for soft adventure.

Full Day Sightseeing - Caves & Paulong Hill Tribe Visit

Depart Chiang Mai and travel north for a visit to Chiang Dao caves. Lunch at a local restaurant then a stop at a forest temple followed by a drive along rural back roads through scenic countryside to a rare Paulong hill tribe village. Continue on to Ban Thaton checking into Maekok River Village Resort on the banks of the Kok river.

Prior to leaving the Chiang Mai area you visit Wat Doi Suthep, the handicraft markets, and the Orchid & Butterfly Farm. Lunch at a local restaurant is followed by a three hour drive north along a scenic route broken by a stop for afternoon tea in the grounds of a provincial resort. Continue on to Ban Thaton checking into Maekok River Village Resort on the banks of the Kok river.

Visit Wat Doi Suthep and then the Orchid & Butterfly Farm. Travel north to the Mae Tamman valley for an oxcart ride, an elephant safari, and a short bamboo raft trip. Take lunch, then drive scenic rural back roads visiting a forest temple and a rare Paulong hill tribe village. Continue on to Ban Thaton checking into Maekok River Village Resort on the banks of the Kok river.

Depart Chiang Mai and head north to the Fang valley and the forest temple of Wat Tum Tubtao. Cycle along rural back roads through rolling agricultural landscapes, stopping for lunch at a suitable spot. Then on to a rare Paulong hill tribe village. Re-board the vehicle after your 2-3 hour cycling stage and continue on to Ban Thaton checking into Maekok River Village Resort on the banks of the Kok river.

Full Day Tour – Sightseeing – Elephant Safari, Tea Plantation, visit to a rare Paulong Hill Tribe village and a remote Lahu Shaleh village.

Depart Chiang Mai by vehicle at 07:00hrs and travel via the Samoeng Loop road to a remote Elephant Camp in the mountains outside Chiang Mai to commence an Elephant Safari through the surrounding jungle. Visit a tea processing factory high up (1700 metres) in the mountains of the Chiang Dao range. The views are stunning (great for photographers) and the tea plantations are worked by local hill tribes people. Take lunch in a local roadside restaurant in the village of Chiang Dao. Continue north along rural back roads to visit a rare Paulong hill tribe village, and one of the few accessible Lahu Shaleh hill tribe villages in the north. Overnight at Maekok River Village Resort, the adventure tour base on the banks of the Kok river on the outskirts of the Thai-Burma border village of Ban Thaton.
